Salary: £40k. pro rata

Contract: Permanent (following 3-month probationary period)

Hours: Flexible – we anticipate this role requiring 21 hours / 3 days a week in year one with flexible working. We are open to discussing alternative hours / days and ideally would want to develop this into a full-time role or job share in future years to achieve Queer Britain fundraising targets. 

Annual leave: 25 days pro-rata plus public holidays

Works with: Patrons, Trustees, CEO, Operations Manager, Volunteers, sub-committees

Location: Queer Britain currently operates out of our partner M&C Saatchi’s office in London’s Soho as well as from home. We are committed to creating as flexible a hybrid position as possible. Occasional regional and national travel may be required.

Key responsibilities

The Head of Development role combines strategic development and operational delivery. They will be responsible for securing the income and resources needed to deliver a National LGBTQ+ Museum, for all. They will place the vision, mission, and values of the charity at the heart of their work in helping to build and secure a strong and successful future for QB.

The Head of Development will be expected to have a donor-focused but entrepreneurial mindset and will have a special focus on, but not limited to, philanthropy and individual giving, one-off and corporate donations.

You will secure resource for delivery of our business plan, operations, special projects and the design and delivery of a major capital project, as well as working with the CEO to develop a fundraising team and driving a fundraising culture through the organisation and ensuring that marketing and communication materials and events support fundraising goals.

·Working closely with the CEO, Patrons, Trustees, key staff, and volunteers to ensure that the development ambitions in the Business Plan are achieved

·Working with the CEO and trustees to translate the priorities and objectives of the Business Plan into deliverable objectives

·Input on further iterations of the business plan

·Helping design an ambitious but realistic and achievable Capital Campaign

·Ensuring that annual fundraising targets are achieved

·Provide updates and information to the main Board and sub-committees regarding any development issues and providing regular written and verbal updates as requested by the CEO

·Maintaining relationships with existing supporters and building partnerships with new individuals and organisations to secure support and income (along with the CEO and Trustees)

·To lead the board in their fundraising efforts

·To turn the business plan into a fundraising strategy

·To source and secure new donor relationship and inspire peer to peer fundraising.

·Act as a spokesperson and advocate for the museum as required

·Completing fundraising bids and applications to a wide range of funders; diversifying the range of funders approached and focusing on applications over £10,000

·Other fundraising related activity, as agreed with the CEO

Enterprise and commercial income

·Setting a commercial income strategy and targets for the museum’s commercial activities with the Trading Company which reflects the museum’s Business Plan

·Ensuring the museum’s commercial services develop a hybrid approach which builds on experience gained during the pandemic with an online shop, hybrid, and online events

Other duties

·To perform all tasks in line with Queer Britain’s policies, the Institute of Fundraising’s code of ethics and the Fundraising Regulator’s code of practice.

·To deputise for the CEO in appropriate areas

·To assist in the setting of targets and budgets

·To contribute to Queer Britain’s CRM systems as appropriate, performing all tasks in compliance with Data Protection and GDPR Regulations

·To perform other duties as required and commensurate with level of responsibility

Experience, knowledge, and skills

We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate experience, knowledge, and skills across the following criteria:

Experience

·Experience of managing staff, budgets, and resources at a senior level

·Experience of success with a capital campaign and experience of securing high levels of income in a museum, charity, or similar organisation

·Experience of ethically building and managing donor relationships (individual and corporate)

·Experience of securing funding from trusts and foundations such as National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), Arts Council or similar

Knowledge and Understanding

·A nuanced understanding of individual, trusts and corporate fundraising methods

·Sound knowledge of digital communications and marketing tools, techniques, and platforms, including the collection and analysis of data for online engagement

·Understanding of key principles and ethics of fundraising, particularly in relation to individual donors and corporate supporters as lain down by the Institute of Fundraising and the Fundraising Regulator

Skills and Abilities

·Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

·Attention to detail with accurate and excellent administration skills

·Ability to work well under pressure and manage and prioritise workload

·Ability to operate at both strategic and operational levels
