Surfers Against Sewage is a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that inspires, unites and empowers communities to take action to protect oceans, beaches, waves and wildlife. Our mission is simple: to Create Ocean Activists everywhere.

Our projects target coastal environment issues including marine plastic pollution, water quality, climate change and ocean protection.

From our headquarters in St Agnes, Cornwall, we protect beaches, monitor water quality, organise beach cleans, run educational programmes, lobby government and industry, report pollution and campaign for the conservation and protection of our ocean.

 Who we are looking for:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and confident Community Fundraiser with excellent communication skills to join our team at Surfers Against Sewage – the UK’s leading marine conservation and campaigning charity, fighting to protect the ocean.

We are looking for a positive and proactive individual to build long term relationships with new and existing supporters, inspiring and supporting them to raise funds and awareness of our work.You will develop and deliver a range of fundraising activity and create incredible supporter experiences for our participants.

You will be responsible for leading on the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of fundraising activities and resources. To be successful, you will be a strong communicator and relationship builder, both with external audiences as well as colleagues across the charity.

 What you’ll be doing

  • Developing and delivering mass participation campaigns and new fundraiser products that engage people with our work and generate funds to help save the ocean
  • Growing the community database by engaging and encouraging new audiences who have a connection with our cause to fundraise for SAS
  • Analysing and reviewing community performance, developing and delivering plans which support annual income generation and engagement
  • Developing and managing a portfolio of community fundraising activities
  • Growing fundraising income from community relationships
  • Developing partnerships to grow community fundraising income, including schools and community groups
  • Working with local and national community groups to raise awareness of and support for SAS
  • Developing our fundraising resources, taking an audience first approach
  • Working with our Communications and Fundraising colleagues to celebrate and share stories of our fundraisers, driving awareness and inspiring others to take action
  • Representing SAS at external events
  • Working with the Database Officer to extract and analyse fundraiser data from our CRM to identify trends and opportunities
  • Leading on the development of systems and processes for community fundraising in close collaboration with our Database Officer and Fundraising Administrator
  • Championing community fundraising to our existing communities and volunteers
  • Delivering an amazing supporter experience and relationship management for our fundraisers, making them feel valued and engaged with our work

What you will be able to demonstrate

  • Experience of planning and implementing a successful community fundraising portfolio
  • Experience of building successful relationships with fundraisers
  • Being a positive, and proactive communicator, with the ability to engage with fundraisers and community groups in person and remotely
  • Being creative and proactive
  • Knowledge of websites, digital marketing, and social media, and how to use these to drive fundraising and fundraiser engagement
  • Highly organised with the ability to juggle several deadlines at the same time
  • Ability to analyse data and trends and evaluate activities to apply learnings to future activities

Your Skills and Knowledge

  • Previous experience of community fundraising
  • An enthusiastic, pro-active and self-motivated approach
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Approachable and confident with a friendly and polite manner
  • Good time management skills.
  • Excellent IT skills, confident with Excel and all other aspects of Microsoft 365. CRM training will be given.
